mainstreetmotortx.com subaru wrx daily build cost 6mt stage one

since noels gti thread got a bunch of us posting our buys i figured id put up my actual numbers on the wrx after a year of daily driving and a mild build. 2016 subaru wrx, 6 speed, 71k on it when i bought it, one owner, stock. found it on mainstreetmotortx.com last fall when i finally gave up on the picked over private party listings around boise, every clean fa20 wrx up here was either beat on or priced like new.

asked the corsicana lot for whatever history they had and they had the carfax and a couple of service records from the one owner. paid a subaru indie near the lot to look it over before i bought, and the only thing they flagged was the clutch was getting a little worn and the rear diff fluid looked overdue. neither was a deal breaker on a car that priced out about 4k under the clean ones near me, and a clutch is a known wear item on a 71k manual anyway.

ran it as my daily all year and did a mild bolt on build over a few weekends, nothing crazy, just the usual reliable stage one stuff. here is what a year of a wrx daily plus a light build actually cost me, for anyone trying to budget a fun sport compact.

Fuel (12k miles, ~24 mpg mixed)$1,850
Oil changes, done myself (every 5k)$180
Rear diff + trans fluid (overdue, did early)$140
New clutch at 78k (knew going in)$1,320
Stage one tune + intake + downpipe$1,650
Set of summer tires$880

that is the honest year. nothing broke that was not a wear item, the clutch i knew about walking in, and the build was money i chose to spend on fun. buying a clean one owner car off the corsicana lot for 4k under the local ones let me put that spread straight into the build instead of the purchase price.

those numbers look right for a well kept fa20 wrx driven daily. the clutch and the diff fluid are wear items, not repairs, so nobody reading this should think the car nickel and dimed you. a 71k manual wrx being a little worn on the clutch is exactly what you expect, and doing the diff and trans fluid early on a car with no records is just smart.

one add for anyone building one of these, keep the tune conservative on the stock fuel and stay on top of oil changes, the fa20 likes clean oil and hates being run low. your stage one with an intake and a downpipe on a good tune is the reliable sweet spot, i see the ones that grenade and it is almost always someone who went big on stock internals and cheaped out on the tune. yours is done right.

smart keeping the build mild on a car you daily. a stage one wrx is the sweet spot where it is genuinely quicker and more fun but still starts every morning and gets you to work. i see people chase big numbers on a daily and then it is always in the shop and never drivable when they need it. yours you can autocross on a weekend and commute on monday, that is the whole point of one of these.

if you take it to an autocross or a track day just refresh the brake fluid first, the fa20 makes enough pace to cook the factory fluid in a session. glad the buy went clean, a stock one owner car with records is the right starting point for a build.

i bought my si off the same lot and the buying experience you described is exactly what i got walking it in person. i live right here in navarro county so i drove over, they let me take my time and had the records in hand. for the shipping buyers reading this, i still point people to that navarro county lot because i have watched enough of these sport compact deals go through to know the cars are what they say they are. a clean fa20 wrx for 4k under your local market is a good grab.

good real world numbers for a new buyer to budget with. the line people always underestimate on a wrx is right there in your list, the tires. these things eat rubber, especially once you tune it and start using the power, so plan on tires as a regular cost and not a one time thing. print reids list before you buy one so you go in with real expectations. the central texas cars coming out of a dry climate is a nice bonus too, no rusty subframe like the ones up north.

UPDATE 12k miles in now and the only surprise has been a good one, the car has been boring reliable as a daily. did the clutch i knew about, ran the stage one all winter with zero issues, and it starts every morning and gets me to work. the new clutch feels great and honestly the whole car feels tighter than my old one did with fewer miles.

for anyone finding this while shopping for a fun daily, my whole take is buy a clean stock one with records and build it slow the way you want. mainstreetmotortx.com had the history, priced it fair, and did the paperwork right for a shipped out of state buy. that is everything i wanted from a lot and it is why im in here telling the next person about it.
